Purple Power Smoothie

I love smoothies.

They are tasty, quick, easy to make. Smoothies are my go to breakfast on weekdays post-workouts when I'm stretched for time and have to quickly get ready for work.

I usually make green smoothies but always seem to end up using all my veggies  while I still have lots of fruits on hand. This has happened to me over the past few days so I decided to drink more fruit smoothies until I can stock up on groceries this weekend.

This morning I made a delicious blueberry chocolate smoothie packed with protein from hemp seeds and peanut butter with an added nutritional boost from ground flax seeds.



Hemp seeds are little power packed nutrition nuggets. According to WebMD, two tablespoons of hemp seeds have two grams of fiber, five grams of protein, 300 mg of potassium, 15 percent of your vitamin-A requirement and 25 percent of your daily iron needs.You can sprinkle these guys over salads or other foods for a crunch, but I found I don't like their taste that much when served that way. I had a bag of hemp seeds in the fridge for months after a bad experience with them on a salad but have found that blending them in a smoothie masks the taste. Another way I can stomach them is on sliced banana dipped in peanut butter.

Flax seeds are another nutritional powerhouse. WebMD says "a tablespoon of flax meal offers 37 calories, about 2 grams of fiber, over a gram of protein and 3 grams of omega-3- and omega-6-loaded fat. In addition, flax meal is an excellent source of magnesium, manganese, fiber, thiamin and selenium."

The addition of the cocoa powder gives it a slight chocolate taste that goes well with the peanut butter. Feel free to add a bit more than I did if you like it super chocolatey. Cocoa powder has iron, magnesium and zinc, so you can have your chocolate in your smoothie and not feel guilty about it!

Purple Power Smoothie 
1 cup plant milk (I used flax seed milk)
2 ripe bananas, peeled
1 cup organic wild blueberries
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (or more to taste)
1/2 cup of ice cubes (optional)

Place ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!
